International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2022

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November 2022, a day that is observed annually and internationally to raise awareness that women and girls are disproportionally subjected to domestic, sexual, and other forms of violence; understands that, where gender information was recorded, four in five (80%) incidents of domestic abuse in 2020-21 involved a female victim and a male accused; further understands that sexual crimes, towards all genders but disproportionally towards women and girls, account for 5% of all crimes recorded in Scotland in 2021-22, and that such crimes increased by 15% compared to 2020-21, from 13,131 to 15,049; understands that these crimes are now at the highest level seen since 1971, the first year for which comparable groups are available; commends all those set to take part in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, from 25 November to 10 December 2022; considers that organisations such as Rape Crisis Scotland, Grampian Rape Crisis, Scottish Women’s Aid, Engender, Dundee International Women’s Centre, and many others, should be commended for their work, which assists and supports all women and girls; believes that all elected representatives should support their efforts, in particular men, and considers that the fight for an inclusive feminist world continues.
