Impact of Cost of Living Crisis on Victims of Domestic Abuse

The motion

That Parliament recognises that 25 November 2022, which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marks the first day of the annual global campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, ending on 10 December; applauds the work of organisations, including Scottish Women’s Aid, in emphasising what it understands is the impact of the current cost of living crisis in placing more women and children at risk of domestic abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, rape and sexual assault; understands that women’s poverty is one of the critical enabling conditions for perpetration of these crimes; considers that the cost of living crisis exacerbates what it sees as the already often impossible choice for women between leaving and facing homelessness and destitution, or staying with an abuser; believes that the soaring cost of living, against the backdrop of what it sees as a decade of stagnant wages, an inadequate social security safety net and the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on women is creating a nightmare storm; applauds Scottish Women’s Aid on what it sees as its tireless efforts to support women and ensure that the needs of women and children experiencing domestic abuse are not forgotten in response to this cost of living crisis; notes that the global theme for the 2022 campaign is "UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls", which calls for worldwide actions to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations; believes that gender-based violence is widespread in Scotland, and considers that it can and must be prevented through societal change.
