Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Comedy Award Created for Glasgow Festival
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Sir Billy Connolly and comedy festival organisers on the announcement of a new award celebrating the spirit of Glasgow; understands that The Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award will be the only official award given by the Glasgow International Comedy Festival when it takes place in spring 2023; further understands that an independent judging panel will consider nominations made by registered participants in the festival, which runs from 15 March to 2 April 2023; notes that the eventual winner will be the show, individual or group that judges feel most personifies the spirit of Glasgow Festival; acknowledges that it is the beginning of a new era for the Glasgow International Comedy Festival; understands that it is proud to have Sir Billy Connolly’s support in celebrating the spirit of the city shown through the immense comedy talent on display during the three weeks in March; further understands that it hopes that the award will add to the celebration and shine a light on some of the incredible hard work by acts and individuals within the comedy industry, and believes that this award will recognise the outstanding talent on show at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival and honour the city’s beloved comedy genius, Sir Billy Connolly, who, it believes, has put Glasgow firmly on the worldwide comedy stage.
