Orkney Skate Trust Marine Partnership with SSEN Transmission

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the partnership between the Orkney Skate Trust and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission to improve marine biodiversity and help halt the decline of the critically endangered flapper skate; understands that SSEN Transmission is providing financial and technical support to the Orkney Skate Trust to help undertake marine surveys and gain invaluable geophysical data and high-quality, non-invasive imagery from the seabed around Orkney; further understands that this will help assist local conservation measures to specifically protect flapper skate, their nursery grounds and egg cases, while at the same time creating a scientific database for the benefit of other conservation NGOs and government agencies; notes that Orkney’s network of over 70 islands and skerries provides a perfect refuge for the world's largest known skate species, which the International Union for Conservation of Nature considers is critically endangered to human activity; recognises that the Orkney Skate Trust was established in 2010 by Daniel Wise and is a volunteer-led group of citizen scientists who use a range of tools to monitor, research and raise the profile of this enigmatic skate, and commends what it sees as the world-leading efforts of the Orkney Skate Trust, and the invaluable support from SSEN Transmission, NatureScot, Seasearch Scotland and many other local and national organisations in this important conservation effort.
