The Poverty Alliance and Scottish Women’s Budget Group Report

The motion

That the Parliament notes the publication of the joint report by The Poverty Alliance and Scottish Women’s Budget Group, "It’s hard work being poor" Women's Experiences of the Cost-of-Living Crisis in Scotland; understands that the report provides qualitative evidence of the gendered nature of the cost of living crisis and the vulnerable position that women are facing as costs rise, including in the East Lothian constituency; notes that, according to the report, women are being disproportionately impacted by the cost of living crisis due to existing inequalities across all areas of life, are more likely to be living in poverty, have lower levels of savings and wealth, and are less able to increase paid work than men due to caring responsibilities; further notes that these findings outline the lived experience of women on low incomes as prices keep rising; considers that the key themes from the research show deepening poverty, concern over managing basic food and energy costs, rising debt, increased feelings of shame, guilt and stigma; notes what it sees as the significant impact on mental as well as physical health that can result from coping mechanisms, which include reducing food intake and energy use, and notes the calls for urgent action to use all support levers available to ensure that women do not fall through the cracks during this cost of living crisis.
