Lodged by Monica Lennon (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 10 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes that the European Commission has recently proposed revised rules for protecting the environment, including stronger rules on cleaner air and water; understands that these do not cover the crime of ecocide; further understands that this decision was made in the aftermath of Stop Ecocide International (SEI) and We Move Europe (WME) submitting a petition to urge the European Commission to recognise ecocide as a crime; regrets that the Commission did not include the crime of ecocide in its proposals; congratulates SEI and WME on what it sees as the widespread support they have received for this petition; urges the European Commission to further revise its proposals to include criminalising ecocide; considers that the Scottish Government has pledged to be a world leader in tackling climate change, and urges the Scottish Government to work with SEI and other stakeholders to examine possibilities for criminalising ecocide in Scotland, and help lead the international campaign to criminalise ecocide.
