Wishing Orkney Archaeologist Julie Gibson a Happy Retirement

The motion

That the Parliament wishes the Orkney archaeologist, Julie Gibson, a happy retirement after more than 25 years of outstanding service to archaeology in the islands; notes that Julie has held the role of county archaeologist for Orkney since the late 1990s, having first been employed by Orkney Heritage Society and, latterly, the Orkney Archaeology Trust, during which time she has become a widely respected figure in the local community and beyond; understands that Julie was instrumental in establishing the University of the Highlands and Islands' Archaeology Institute in Orkney, which has grown into a world-class organisation combining teaching, academic research, commercial applied research and consultancy; further understands that, among many achievements, Julie played a pivotal role in the excavation of the Viking boat burial at Scar in Sanday, yielding several important finds that would have otherwise been lost due to rapid coastal erosion; acknowledges what it sees as the immense wealth, variety and importance of archaeology across Orkney, which is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ongoing discoveries of global significance; believes that Julie has made a huge contribution to archaeology in the islands, helping to preserve its benefit for future generations, establishing Orkney as a world-renowned centre for archaeological research, and raising awareness of the dangers to coastlines posed by climate change; thanks Julie for her service and contribution, and wishes her all the very best for the future.
