South Lanarkshire Council Passes Divestment Motion

Lodged by Gillian Mackay (Scottish Green Party) Standard Motion 12 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates South Lanarkshire’s Scottish Green councillor, Kirsten Robb, for her work on her motion to call on Scotland’s largest local authority pension fund to divest from funding in fossil fuels; notes that divestment is the act of removing stock, bonds or investment funds, which is most commonly used by organisations seeking to end investment into the fossil fuel industry; further notes that the motion commits the council to writing to the Strathclyde Pension Fund Committee to call for it to renew its commitment to fossil fuel divestment completely as quickly as possible and no later than 2029; understands that the motion also required South Lanarkshire Council to review its own investment strategy and implement a Responsible Investment Strategy to ensure that South Lanarkshire money is invested for positive change and does not fuel the climate and economic crises; further understands that the motion was overwhelmingly supported by the majority of South Lanarkshire councillors, and acknowledges the success of Kirsten achieving this positive change that it believes will benefit local communities.
