Stonewall’s Proud Stadium Campaign During Qatar World Cup
The motion
That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the importance of Stonewall’s Proud Stadium campaign that seeks to raise awareness of LGBT+ rights and representation during the 2022 World Cup taking place in Qatar; further recognises what it considers the necessity of the campaign due to the well-documented injustices that the LGBT+ community faces in Qatar; understands that Stonewall’s Proud Stadium is a virtual collection of signatures of people who want to send a powerful message to global leaders, sponsors, broadcasters and politicians that LGBT+ rights are human rights and that they firmly stand against the reported persecution of LGBT+ people in Qatar; further understands that the Proud Stadium aims to record 80,000 signatures, the same number as the capacity of Lusail Stadium in Qatar where the world cup final will be held; recognises that, in addition to the Proud Stadium campaign, Stonewall has continued to urge the wearing of rainbow laces as a sign of LGBT+ solidarity, and considers that this gesture is especially important in light of football associations' decisions to not wear the OneLove armbands during world cup games, reportedly as a result of FIFA threating to impose sporting sanctions; notes that, on 29 November 2022, Stonewall is calling on all of the UK’s parliaments to show support for the Proud Stadium Campaign, and believes that by doing so they will send a strong, amplified message against what it sees as the hatred and intolerance of the LGBT+ community in Qatar and worldwide.
