The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the success of the Iona Heat Network in winning 2022’s Social Innovation Challenge delivered by the enterprise agency, Firstport; understands that the project, led by the Iona-based charity, Iona Renewables, aims to serve the island of Iona with a community-owned, low-carbon heating network; further understands that the shared ground source heat network will benefit schools, homes and businesses, and is set to initially save over 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, with the potential for an extra 90 tonnes to be saved when renewables power the network; considers that the project addresses the unique challenges faced by Iona as a remote island, such as not having a connection to the national gas network and the high costs of transporting traditional fossil fuels, which it understands has led to high levels of fuel poverty; congratulates the team behind the Iona Heat Network on its success in securing this award and additional funding, and wishes everyone involved the very best in completing and delivering the project.
