Rolls Royce Hydrogen Jet Engine Test

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Rolls Royce's successful test of a jet engine powered by hydrogen, generated in Orkney by the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC); notes that the ground test took place at a facility at Boscombe Down using a converted Rolls Royce AE 2100-A regional jet engine; further notes that the test, considered to be a world-first, was progressed through a partnership between Rolls Royce and easyJet who confirmed their breakthrough of a modern aero engine powered by hydrogen on 28 November 2022; understands that the green hydrogen used for the test was produced at EMEC's hydrogen production facility in Eday, Orkney, where wind and tidal renewable energy generates an electric current to split water into its hydrogen and oxygen components; believes that the exciting breakthrough is a significant development in accelerating the decarbonisation of the aviation industry, which will be essential in meeting net zero ambitions; applauds EMEC on its involvement, which, it believes, further demonstrates Orkney's world-leading role in the development of renewable energy; commends Rolls Royce and easyJet for their pioneering efforts, and wishes the project every success in future.
