Little Terns Project Awarded High Commendation

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the pupils of Burray Primary School and Hope Primary School in Orkney on being awarded high commendation at the Nature of Scotland Awards in Edinburgh; recognises that the efforts of the pupils to safeguard the little tern colony nesting on the beach at the fourth Churchill Barrier beach between Burray and South Ronaldsay contributed to a significant rise in the number of fledging chicks this year; understands that the pupils teamed up with RSPB Scotland to produce decoy little terns, chick shelters and posters, which helped make the public aware of the UK's most northerly little tern colony and how to avoid disturbing it; notes that there are only 2,000 pairs of little terns thought to be left in the UK due to the impact of climate change and human disturbance; believes that the partnership between RSPB Scotland and the local schools has set an excellent example of how to involve children and young people with the conservation of our natural environment; thanks the pupils for their hard work, including as part of regular beach cleans, and inspiring enthusiasm for looking after the protected species, and hopes the project will enjoy continued success in future.
