Supporting Unite Members at Shelter Taking Action Over Low Pay

That the Parliament welcomes what it considers as the important contribution of Shelter, and its dedicated workforce, across the country, who work tirelessly to support people in crisis, campaign to end what it sees as the housing emergency and provide vital frontline services in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee and beyond; supports Unite members at Shelter who are on strike for a fortnight from 5 December 2022; understands that the strike follows the organisation's reported imposition of a 3% pay deal without proper consultation; recognises that the Retail Price Index (RPI) is at its highest level since 1980 and is currently over 10% higher than Shelter’s reported imposed 3% pay deal; believes that, at a time when energy bills, food prices and housing costs are skyrocketing, wages are drastically falling in real terms; encourages Shelter to get round the table with Unite to negotiate what it sees as a fair deal for their workers and tireless campaigners; understands that Shelter has what it considers as healthy reserves of £13.5 million, which is substantially in excess of the organisation's target reserves of £8.9 million; believes that, rather than sit on what it understands are ever-expanding reserves, Shelter should be giving its workers a fair pay rise, and considers that those working for a housing charity should not be forced into housing insecurity as a result of low pay, meaning that they are unable to afford their rent.
