The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement that the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) has awarded a £51.8 million contract to build what it sees as a state-of-the-art hybrid powered ship to support its vital safety service to mariners; understands that the new vessel, scheduled for delivery by mid-2025 by Astilleros Gondán Shipbuilders, will be one of the most technologically advanced in its class, with advanced navigation and communications systems allowing hydrographic inspections and location of marine disasters, as well as improved servicing, towing and firefighting capabilities; considers that it will follow a proud heritage as the fifth NLB vessel to bear the name Pole Star since 1892, and will significantly improve NLB's operations, alongside NLV Pharos, to manage and maintain 208 lighthouses, 174 buoys and assist aids to navigation on oil and gas platforms around the coastlines of Scotland and the Isle of Man; understands that the new vessel will meet the ambitious environmental targets set out in the UK Government Clean Maritime Plan through a series of energy efficiency technologies; commends what it considers the vital work of the NLB in upholding world-class levels of safety in our waters, and providing skilled jobs in our maritime sector; thanks all who have served on the current NLV Pole Star after 23 years' service, and wishes the construction of the new vessel all the very best.
