Beaver Relocation to Loch Lomond Nature Reserve

The motion

That the Parliament commends the successful application for the relocation of a family of beavers from Tayside to Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve; thanks RSPB Scotland, NatureScot and Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority for their efforts to make this happen; values what it sees as the key role of beavers as ecosystem engineers in enhancing biodiversity and tackling the nature crisis; recognises what it considers the hard work of over 50 stakeholder organisations in developing Scotland's Beaver Strategy; regrets that hundreds of beavers have, it understands, been shot and killed since they became a protected species in 2019; believes that a culture change is needed to normalise relocation instead of shooting beavers; understands that Loch Lomond is the third new site approved for the release of beavers in Scotland, following the initial beaver reintroduction trial at Knapdale in Argyll and the release at Argaty, near Doune last year, and encourages public bodies and wildlife charities to do all they can to make new sites available for beaver relocations, to enable more beavers to be moved to safety more quickly in 2023.
