Carbon Capture Scotland Secures Investment

That the Parliament congratulates Carbon Capture Scotland (CCS), a carbon capture utilisation and storage project specialist, for the launch of Project Nexus, which, it understands, is a carbon removal initiative that, by 2030, aims to remove one million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every year and to generate up to 500 jobs in rural Scotland; notes that the company is run by Richard and Ed Nimmons, with a focus on capturing biogenic CO2 emissions from processes such as whisky fermentation, anaerobic digestion, and biomass incinerations, and on transporting the captured carbon for permanent removal in sequestration sites; understands that the £120 million investment will consist of a series of infrastructure and supply chain projects, allowing for a sustainable and commercial means of CO2 removal, starting with projects in Southern, Central and Northern Scotland; further understands that CCS has been piloting a number of carbon capturing and processing technologies at its Dumfries and Galloway headquarters near Crocketford, where it currently captures and/or recycles more than 10,000 tonnes of CO2 for utilisation to make dry ice; understands that this £4 million project is a world-first and has been a key component in maintaining dry ice supplies during the recent COVID-19 vaccination rollout and CO2 shortages; commends the combined investment, including from the Scottish Government, of £80 million which, it understands, will secure the company’s further continued growth and development, together with a dedicated £5 million fund to support carbon utilisation, and wishes Richard, Ed and all the team at Carbon Capture Scotland, every success as they take forward this innovative Project Nexus.
