Supporting Modern Apprenticeship Training in Electrical Installation

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the importance of electrical installation apprenticeships in improving opportunities for individuals, and the vital role, it believes, improved skills contribute towards economic prosperity, in line with the aims of the Scottish Government’s National Strategy for Economic Transformation on achieving net zero and a wellbeing economy; congratulates the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) on delivering over 11,000 electrical installation apprenticeships on behalf of the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB) in the last 15 years; understands that the majority of these apprentices, including those trained by member firms of SELECT, the trade body for the electro technical industry in Scotland, are still working in the sector, and are paying approximately £42 million in tax annually; further understands that a record 960 apprentices have been recruited in the academic year 2022-23; regrets that Skills Development Scotland, despite a calendar year end review, has reportedly only funded 776 places, and calls on Skills Development Scotland and the Scottish Government to make available the shortfall of approximately £1.6 million for the remaining 184 places, which, it believes, would be in the best interests of the individuals affected and the Scottish economy.
