World Braille Day

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 4 January 2022 was World Braille Day; acknowledges that this day is celebrated to honour the birth of Braille’s inventor, Louis Braille, who was born on 4 January 1809; further acknowledges that this day also advocates for the human rights of those who are visually impaired and blind; understands that Braille began developing his invention at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in France, and sadly died in 1852 before the wider impact of his invention was realised; recognises that, given Louis Braille’s vast achievements and opening up a world of accessibility to blind and visually impaired people, the UN General Assembly declared 4 January would be World Braille Day in 2018; notes that Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols; remembers Louis Braille for his lifechanging invention, and welcomes the UN's recognition of who it sees as an underappreciated pioneer.
