The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Professor John McKendrick, co-director of the Scottish Poverty and Inequality Research Unit at Glasgow Caledonian University, on his appointment as Commissioner for Fair Access; notes that, in this role, he will oversee efforts by universities and colleges to offer equal access to higher and further education; understands that the sector has a target to ensure that a fifth of all entrants to higher education come from the 20% most deprived communities in Scotland by 2030; further understands that, according to the Report on Widening Access 2020-21, 16.7% of Scottish-domiciled entrants to university come from the 20% most deprived areas; understands that the remaining challenge to reach the 2030 goals has been described by the outgoing Commissioner for Fair Access, Sir Peter Scott, as "the hardest mile"; wishes Professor McKendrick success in delivering further progress towards the 2030 target of 20%, and commits to supporting the delivery of what it considers to be a challenging but attainable target.
