Taliban University Ban
The motion
That the Parliament condemns the Taliban’s reported ban on women studying at university; understands that the Taliban’s reasoning is that female students are not adhering to its interpretation of the Islamic dress code and interaction between students of different genders; notes that a video obtained by the Associated Press reportedly appears to show Taliban security using violence to disperse protesters, with reports of beatings and whippings taking place also; deplores the comments by the acting Afghan higher education minister, Neda Mohammad Nadeem, who is reportedly quoted as saying “girls were studying agriculture and engineering, but this did not match Afghan culture...girls should learn, but not in areas that go against Islam and Afghan honour”; understands that, following the reported university bans, the Taliban ushered in bans against women working for non-governmental organisations; further understands that, given these reported bans, a number of aid organisations have suspended their work in Afghanistan because of the need for women to carry out certain work, especially in assisting other women; welcomes the international community’s reported condemnation of such bans; expresses its solidarity with the women affected by such bans, and hopes that there will be a free and safe Afghanistan for women and all citizens in the future.
