The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Michael Dickson on being appointed an OBE in the New Year's Honours for services to healthcare in Orkney and Shetland during the COVID-19 pandemic; believes that Michael has led both NHS Orkney and NHS Shetland with determination throughout the COVID-19 pandemic during a period of immense challenge for the delivery of healthcare in both island communities; understands that Michael, a nurse with a background in cancer care, chemotherapy and haematology, took up the role of NHS Shetland chief executive in January 2020 and interim chief executive of NHS Orkney in June 2020, bringing experience on national programmes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to the isles; commends Michael for quickly rising to the challenge of managing a high outbreak of COVID-19 in Shetland early in his new role and going on to oversee what it considers was a hugely successful testing and vaccination programme roll-out across both Orkney and Shetland; recognises Michael’s commitment to good and proactive communication with the public, including through the use of livestreams, which, it understands, proved popular and attracted audiences from around the world throughout the pandemic; believes that this is well-deserved recognition of the leadership role played by Michael; thanks him for his service to Orkney and Shetland, and wishes him all the very best for the future.
