Walk Your Dog Month

Lodged by Evelyn Tweed Standard Motion 28 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that January is Walk Your Dog Month, which aims to help dogs and their owners by getting out in the outdoors, providing, it believes, health benefits for both the owner and their dog; understands that dog obesity continues to increase across Scotland with statistics from 2020 showing that 41% of dogs are overweight, which, it understands, can lead to secondary conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease and certain forms of cancer; further understands that the biggest reason given for not being able to exercise dogs appropriately is "being too busy", whilst dog walking reduces further in winter months; believes that regular exercise can reduce stress and positively impact people's mental health, whilst also improving physical health and reducing obesity, and encourages dog owners to take part in Walk Your Dog Month for the benefit of themselves and their dog.
