Lanarkshire Firefighters Commemorated

The motion

That the Parliament notes the commemoration of two Lanarkshire firefighters, who, it understands, sadly died in an explosion 60 years ago; understands that Stanley McIntosh MBE, aged 48, and Station Officer Joseph Calderwood, 58, were tragically killed in the line of duty after a blaze broke out at Colville’s Mossend steelworks in Bellshill; notes that on the 60th anniversary of their deaths, a plaque has been unveiled to pay tribute to the firefighters; believes that the plaque is a red plaque, part of a scheme set up by the Fire Brigades Union during its centenary, and funded by the proceeds of the weekly Fire Fighters Lottery, which has been able to create several plaques a year in order to honour firefighters who die in the line of duty, and welcomes the efforts of the firefighters in their endeavours to commemorate their colleagues.
