International Day of Education

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the International Day of Education on 24 January 2023; understands that 2023 marks the mid-point since the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for People, Planet and Prosperity, with a set of 17 interlocking goals that will come up for review in September on the theme of investing in people; further understands that the 2023 International Day calls for maintaining strong political mobilisation around education, charting the way to translate commitments and global initiatives into action; believes that education must be prioritised against the backdrop of what it sees as a global recession, growing worldwide inequalities and the climate crisis; notes that the right to education is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for free and compulsory elementary education, with the Convention on the Rights of the Child going further to stipulate that countries shall make higher education accessible to all; believes that education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future; understands that 244 million children and adolescents around the world are not attending school, with 617 million children and adolescents unable to read or do basic arithmetic; considers that their right to education is being violated and that this is unacceptable; wishes to thank education workers for providing what it considers as world leading education for children in Scotland, and hopes that this International Day contributes to improving education across the world.
