World Wetlands Day
The motion
That the Parliament notes that 2 February 2023 marks the 27th annual World Wetlands Day and the 52nd year since the adoption of the Ramsar Convention; celebrates Scotland’s wetlands as important sites for biodiversity that provide unique and productive habitats to a range of rare, threatened and declining species of plants, mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates; highlights that wetlands provide a host of essential systems, such as those that filter drinking water, mitigate flood risks, support food production and are important sites for biodiversity; considers that the climate and nature emergencies pose an existential threat to the future of Scotland’s wetlands and the species that call them home; highlights that these sites across Scotland are designated for their protection under the Ramsar Convention; welcomes the commitment in the draft Scottish Biodiversity Strategy to introduce a programme of ecosystem restoration; further welcomes the commitment to protect at least 30% of Scotland’s land and sea for nature by 2030, and welcomes calls on the Scottish Government to support greater protection for Scotland’s wetlands.
