The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the event "Scotland at the heart of meeting global challenges"; understands that this event will be jointly held by The Physiological Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh to highlight the contribution that Scotland’s universities make in meeting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through world-leading research and innovation; celebrates what it sees as the role of national academies and learned societies in nurturing research excellence; believes that, through this research, Scotland plays a critical role in ensuring that the world remains an inhabitable and sustainable place for present and future generations; notes that most of the 17 SDGs have a direct health target, including reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one third through prevention and treatment and promoting mental health and well-being, and believes that Scotland is a world leader in the physiology research that underpins the scientific understanding of how the body responds to challenges, which is essential to human health and meeting the SDGs.
