Helensburgh’s Tennis Star, Gordon Reid, Wins 16th Grand Slam Doubles Title
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Helensburgh’s Gordon Reid as well as his partner, Alfie Hewett, on their historical win on 27 January 2023, playing against a Dutch duo, Maikel Scheffers and Ruben Spaargaren, and equalling the record of winning a 16th Grand Slam title together; recognises that Reid and Hewett equalled the record for the most Grand Slam men’s doubles titles won by a pair in the Open era, held until then by American twins, Bob and Mike Bryan; congratulates Reid and Hewett on having won their fourth successive Australian Open wheelchair title; understands that this win marks Gordon Reid’s 22nd major title, both across singles and doubles, including at Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open; appreciates that Reid has been successful in promoting tennis and setting an example for wheelchair tennis players across the UK, and wishes Gordon Reid and his partner Alfie Hewett every success in the future.
