Ken Amer Awarded Special Recognition at Highlands and Islands Media Awards
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Ken Amer from Orkney on being presented with the Special Recognition Award at the Highlands and Islands Media Awards on 3 February 2023 for his contribution to local journalism; understands that Ken has run Orkney Photographic for nearly four decades after moving to the islands in the early 1980s, over which time he has become a well-respected freelance photographer; recognises Ken's immense bravery in publicly revealing his cancer diagnosis in August 2022 in an effort to raise awareness of the importance for men to check for symptoms of prostate cancer; further recognises that Ken received widespread praise from local health services and the wider community for his courage and unwavering determination; believes that the award is well-deserved recognition for Ken's lifelong passion for capturing every aspect of Orkney life and his outstanding contribution to local journalism, which was evidenced by the standing ovation at the awards ceremony, and wishes Ken all the very best in his recovery and continuing in the job that he loves.
