Shetland Pianist Amy Laurenson Wins BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2023

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Amy Laurenson on winning the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2023 Award; understands that Ms Laurenson, who is from Shetland and now lives in Glasgow, is a pianist who trained under Shetland musician, Violet Tulloch, before gaining a First Class Honours degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; praises Ms Laurenson’s hard work during her training, through which she expanded her knowledge of traditional music of Shetland, Norway, Sweden and mainland Scotland, playing at Shetland festivals, as well as ceilidhs and sessions in Glasgow; understands that, as winner, Ms Laurenson will receive a recording session with BBC Scotland, the opportunity to perform at the Scots Trad Music Awards and a one-year membership to the Musicians' Union; expresses its hope that these opportunities will afford Ms Laurenson a positive start to a career in Scottish traditional music; notes that the BBC Radio Scotland contest is renowned as one of the biggest platforms for emerging talent in traditional music, across singing, piping, fiddle, piano and other instruments; commends the work of BBC Radio Scotland in promoting traditional music and fostering new generations of musicians through the award, and wishes Ms Laurenson success with her music career.
