International Mother Language Day 2023

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the annual International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2023, a global initiative to celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity; recognises what it sees as the importance of preserving and protecting all languages used by people around the world, as an estimated 43% of the world’s 6,000 languages are reportedly endangered; appreciates the continued work of the initiative since it was started in Bangladesh and first announced by UNESCO in 1999; understands that the 2023 theme is Multilingual Education; considers multilingual education to be necessary to transform education in a multilingual world; commends the work done by the initiative; hopes that the initiative will bring awareness to what it sees as the cultural significance of preserving the heritage and existence of world languages; believes in the importance of International Mother Language Day in improving access to multilingualism for education, work and social cohesion; further believes that the initiative will encourage individuals to take pride in their mother language and encourage the learning of different languages, and hopes for the continued success of International Mother Language Day.
