Launch of Gaelic New Testament Audio Recording Project

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish Bible Society on the launch of the first full audio recording of the New Testament in modern Scottish Gaelic; understand that in 2022, over 50 Gaelic-speaking volunteers, as well as four actors, completed recording and proof-listening of the text in both Edinburgh and Stornoway; recognises what it sees as the significance of this work both now and for the years to come for Gaelic speakers in Scotland and around the world; notes that funding for the project was contributed by the Faith Comes by Hearing organisation, who, it understands, have successfully completed similar projects in languages around the globe; notes in particular, the support of Stornoway Free Church in hosting the Western Isles-based recording sessions; understands that a series of short films in Gaelic will also be released in conjunction with the project, which, it believes, may be particularly valuable in Gaelic medium educational settings as part of the Religious and Moral Education (RME) curriculum; notes that a celebration of the project’s launch is being held in the Scottish Parliament on 22 February 2023 ahead of the recordings being made available free online from 24 February 2023, and commends all involved in this project, particularly the volunteers, who contributed to the Scottish Bible Society’s ambitious Gaelic audio recording project.
