Scotland’s First Boat Building and Repair Apprentice, Edel McCarthy

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Edel McCarthy from Dalry, on the completion of her Boat Building and Repair Apprenticeship at the Scottish Boat Building School, which is based at the Scottish Maritime Museum; understands that, in 2019, Edel was the first ever apprentice recruited to the course in Scotland, which teaches both traditional and modern boat building skills; recognises that the apprenticeship was developed in partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands, following several years of campaigning by the Scottish Boat Building School to stem the loss of skills as an ageing marine workforce retires and significantly fewer qualified adults and young people enter the boat building and repair industry; notes the enthusiastic work of Martin Hughes, manager of the Scottish Boat Building School, and his colleagues in their commitment to preserving and progressing the boat building industry in Scotland; encourages local communities to get involved through volunteering opportunities and the creation of coastal rowing clubs, and wishes Edel the best in her future career.
