Lodged by Gordon MacDonald Standard Motion 31 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament marks National Nest Box Week from 14 to 21 February 2023; acknowledges what it sees as the importance of providing nesting sites to breeding birds, many of which are reportedly in decline and threatened with extinction locally in Scotland and throughout the UK as recorded in the Birds of Conservation Concern 2021 and in the report, State of Nature 2019; notes that nest boxes are of special importance to some species, such as swifts, which traditionally nest in buildings and which, it understands, are losing traditional nesting sites due to redevelopment and renovation; celebrates the contribution made by many local activists, businesses and school and community groups, including in Balerno as part of Edinburgh Swift City, by building, distributing and installing swift nesting boxes and by working to ensure that existing swift nesting sites are preserved, and understands that citizen scientists can use the Swift Mapper app to record swift nesting sites when the birds return from their migration in May.
