Purple Day 2023

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 26 March marks Epilepsy Awareness Day 2023, better known as Purple Day; understands that epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world, with approximately 58,000 people in Scotland with the condition, and an estimated 826 people with epilepsy in the Aberdeen Donside constituency; considers that people with epilepsy are more likely to develop mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, as a result of the condition; understands that epilepsy is defined as the tendency to have repeated seizures, which start in the brain; further understands that a seizure can be a one-off occurrence triggered by extreme events, such as sustaining a serious head injury, and that, while children and older people are more likely to develop the condition, anyone can develop epilepsy at any time in their life, irrespective of their age, gender or background, with every individual’s epilepsy being different; notes that Epilepsy Scotland takes the opportunity on Purple Day to encourage people to talk about epilepsy and dispel the myths and the stigma attached to the condition, and recognises that buildings such as Marischal College and His Majesty’s Theatre, both in Aberdeen, will be lit up purple to mark Purple Day on 26 March.
