St Ninian's High School Pupils Win Most Sustainable Solution Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates pupils from St Ninian's High School, in Giffnock, on achieving a key prize in a competition aimed at tackling the sources of litter in and around the River Clyde, including burns and tributaries that lead to it; notes that the St Ninian's pupils, who are members of the school's Eco Committee, won the Most Sustainable Solution award at the "Stem the Flow" contest that challenged young people to formulate proposals to either reduce the volume of litter already present in the River Clyde or to stop used items from arriving into the water; acknowledges that, as part of the initiative, the young people were required to develop a project report, create a display and put together a presentation, and pupils from P6 to S3 at a school in any of the eight councils who are members of The West partnership were able to enter the competition; considers that marine litter pollution is a key environmental concern, and understands that the winners of each category were presented with a trophy composed of reclaimed marine plastic; recognises that the project developed by St Ninian's pupils involved conducting a survey of the Auldhouse Burn and designing a solar-powered basket filler, described as "Bin for the Burn", which, complete with a back-up battery, could move around the water to collect plastic cans and bottles, and congratulates the young people from the Giffnock secondary school on their fantastic achievement in winning this award.
