World Book Day 2023
The motion
That the Parliament notes World Book Day on 2 March 2023, which encourages children and young people to read for pleasure by exploring authors, illustrators and publishers, and by visiting bookshops and libraries; understands that UNESCO created World Book Day in 1995, as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, which is now celebrated across 100 countries worldwide; further understands that every child in Lanarkshire will receive a free book token from National Book Tokens, which they can spend at a local bookstore or supermarket; considers that reading for pleasure can promote better health and wellbeing, helps build social connections and relationships with others, is associated with a range of factors that help increase the chances of social mobility, and welcomes what it sees as a fun initiative to encourage and improve literacy across all generations.
