Five More Years of Kirkwall BID
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the renewal of the Kirkwall Business Improvement District (BID), following a vote by Kirkwall town centre businesses; understands that a resounding 109 businesses voted in favour of the continuation of the local, business-led initiative, which was originally founded in Kirkwall in 2013, building on international concepts; highlights the many successful Kirkwall BID initiatives achieved over the previous term, thanks to the collective investment of its members, including the installation of new winter lights, free one-hour winter parking, and the many popular calendar events for all ages at Easter, Halloween and Christmas; recognises that Kirkwall was named Scotland's Most Beautiful High Street in 2019 and, more recently, was voted as the UK's Most Welcoming Town at the Traveller Review Awards 2023; believes that Kirkwall BID has set an exemplary model for keeping town centres alive, attractive and healthy, at a time of what it sees as immense challenges for street-level retail; commends the Kirkwall BID team for this vote of confidence in its hard work, and wishes all of its members the very best of success for the next five years.
