Ministerial Taskforce on Nursing and Midwifery

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the Scottish Government's announcement of the creation of the Ministerial Taskforce on Nursing and Midwifery, with the aim of improving working conditions and boosting workforce numbers; notes that the taskforce recognises the distinct profession of midwifery; agrees with the Royal College of Midwives Scotland that the expert group has an important role to play in driving improvements in midwifery and maternity care, including workforce shortages, and in ensuring that Scotland has a sustainable midwifery workforce now and in the future; notes what it sees as the current challenges being faced in the midwifery profession, including recruitment and retention, and professional development across clinical, education, research and leadership pathways; commends the hard work of registered midwives, maternity support workers and workers within the wider maternity team, and thanks them for their role in assisting people giving birth across Scotland, and looks forward to hearing the report of this taskforce in the future, and in relation to how it can help inform the development of the sustainable and skilled nursing and midwifery workforce of the future.
