The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the Young People’s Right to Food report by the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP); understands that almost 850 responses were received to gather young people’s experiences of accessing food; praises the SYP's work in conducting this extensive research as part of its campaign to find out about young people’s experiences of accessing food, and using this to produce five clear recommendations to be put to decision-makers on potential changes that could improve young people’s access to food; understands that the report highlights the many difficulties that families are facing in Scotland, and that young people want to be more included in the decision-making process regarding issues that affect them, particularly in relation to school meal provision and choices; further understands that only two fifths of respondents knew about the help and support that they could receive to access food in their local communities; notes the view that more work can and must be done to improve this; further notes that what it sees as this notable report harnesses the voices of young people in Scotland, including those in the Highlands and Islands region, in calling for their rights to be recognised by this Parliament, and notes the calls for the right to food to be upheld in Scots law and to create a fair, healthy and sustainable food system that is accessible to everyone.
