Scottish Showjumper Reaches New Heights in Top Equestrian Event

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Great Britain showjumper, James Smith, on riding the horse Arkuga to victory in the prestigious Diputación de Cádiz Grand Prix at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour 2023; notes that James, who lives in the Stewartry in south west Scotland, was one of only nine riders, from an initial field of 130 top international competitors, to score a clean round in this world ranking class event, which is also a qualifier for the 2023 European Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympics; recognises that James's triumph came after a tense jump-off that was watched by a sell-out crowd; acknowledges that this four-star event is his biggest career win to date; understands that James began riding at the age of five, having been encouraged by his grandfather, Charlie McKerlie, and his mother, Lynn, over the past 25 years, and wishes James continued success in his equestrian pursuits in the months ahead.
