Kirkpatrick C2C Route Launched

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the unveiling, at a South of Scotland Destination Alliance conference in Peebles in the Borders, of a 250-mile, coast-to-coast cycle route from Eyemouth on the east coast to Stranraer on the west coast; understands that the new “Kirkpatrick C2C, South of Scotland’s Coast to Coast Route” is named after Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a 19th century Dumfriesshire blacksmith who invented the first pedal-driven velocipede; further understands that the Kirkpatrick C2C is one of a number of new cycling opportunities taking place in the region, alongside the arrival of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in summer 2023; is encouraged by early projections that suggest the new route could attract up to 175,000 new visitors to the region, with potential direct spend of £13.7 million per year, which it considers will support the regional economy; recognises what it sees as the excellent work of the project leaders, Kate Pearson and Joanna Wawrzyczek, of South of Scotland Enterprise, who worked with Sustrans, a charity that aims to make it easier for people to walk and cycle, as well as VisitScotland, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Borders Council, in a collaboration that included the whole cycling landscape in the south of Scotland; congratulates everyone involved in the forthcoming launch of the Kirkpatrick C2C, and wishes the project all the best as it welcomes cyclists to the beautiful countryside of the South Scotland region.
