Sustainable Thinking Scotland CIC Wins Innovation of the Year Award at Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards 2023

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Sustainable Thinking Scotland (STS) CIC, based at Kinneil Estate in Bo’ness, on winning Innovation of the Year Award at the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards 2023, which were held on 23 March 2023 at the APEX City Quay Hotel, Dundee; understands that the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards celebrate partnerships between businesses and third or public sector organisations to highlight the impacts achieved through creative collaboration to support inclusive and sustainable economic growth; recognises that STS received the Innovation of the Year award for their Kinneil recycling project; notes that this project was carried out in conjunction with the University of the Highlands and Islands and focuses on the optimisation of biochar, a stable form of carbon obtained from baking waste wood; recognises what it sees as the opportunities that this work presents by tackling nutrient pollution and preventing toxic algal blooms, and simultaneously improving water quality, filtering algae, reducing particulates in the water and providing a carbon biochar that can be re-used on land as a slow-release fertiliser; congratulates all those from Sustainable Thinking Scotland CIC and the University of the Highlands and Islands on winning the Innovation of the Year Award, and looks forward to seeing their future contributions to a circular economy.
