The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Dennis and Linda Williams, the owners of Broadway Premier in Oxgangs, on the 40th anniversary of the opening of the store; notes that the much-loved convenience store opened in the early 1980s and understands that it has become a pillar of the community in the Oxgangs neighbourhood over the last four decades; understands that the family-run shop has become a much-valued asset to locals, not only serving hot food and household essentials, but also providing a place for the community to come together; further understands that celebratory events will take place in the store, including a supermarket sweep themed “trolley dash”, competitions to win an iPad and a £40 shop, free coffees for all customers, and a selection of items priced at 40 pence to coincide with its milestone year; notes that pupils from Pentland Primary School will sing for customers in addition to performances from the Simon Says Dance School; recognises that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the shop provided free food deliveries for people self-isolating, and, after seeing some of its customers struggling during the difficult period, the Williams family began offering free sandwiches to those in need before launching a hardship fund to help locals buy food and pay for gas and electricity, raising over £10,000, including a generous £1,000 donation from the Williams family themselves; thanks Dennis and Linda Williams, along with their daughter, Sophie, for what it sees as their incredible contribution to the local community, and wishes them many more years as a popular local convenience store and landmark in the Oxgangs area.
