Parliament Commends Disabled Activist for Raising Awareness of Cerebral Palsy
The motion
That Parliament commends Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituent, Ciara McCarthy, aged 18, of Lennoxtown, for raising awareness of cerebral palsy (CP) and being a campaigning voice for people who are disabled; acknowledges that CP is the most common motor disability in childhood; understands that Ciara, who was born with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMW) leading to her being diagnosed with cerebral palsy at nine months old, is now studying for an HNC in social sciences at City of Glasgow College; believes that a disability should not be a barrier to educational and career opportunities; praises Ciara for her work as a disability activist, which has included speaking publicly at party conferences at the Scottish Parliament about her own experiences to increase awareness; agrees with the Cerebral Palsy Scotland CEO, Stephanie Fraser, that raising awareness of cerebral palsy is critical, as that is what will lead to positive change, and believes that the more that people know about cerebral palsy and disability, the more likely it is that people will create a society, and design systems, structures and processes, that are inclusive for everyone.
