Marking the Life of Captain Betsy Miller, Britain’s First Female Sea Captain

The motion

That the Parliament notes the life of Captain Elizabeth “Betsy” Miller from Saltcoats, who is considered to be Britain’s first female sea captain; notes that Betsy’s father, Captain William Miller, was a wood merchant who operated from the harbours of Saltcoats and Ardrossan, who taught Betsy about the shipping trade; understands that Betsy became the owner and captain of the two-masted brig, Clytus, following the death of her father; recognises the role that Betsy and her crew played in shipping coal from Auchenharvie colliery to Ireland and bringing back limestone to the ports on the Ayrshire coast, and acknowledges the respect that Betsy was held in by her 14-man crew and the ports, which she visited until her retirement in 1862.
