Shetland Iron Age Sites Nominated for World Heritage Status

That the Parliament welcomes the news that three Iron Age sites in Shetland remain in the running for potential recognition as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage sites; understands that UNESCO World Heritage Status deems cultural and/or natural sites to be considered to be of Outstanding Universal Value, with special importance for everyone; acknowledges what it sees as the significance of Jarlshof, Old Scatness and Mousa Broch, known as the Zenith of Iron Age Shetland, to both the history and culture of Shetland, as well as to Scotland and the world; acknowledges Jarlshof as a site of human settlement for more than 4,000 years between 2700 BCE and 1600 CE; further acknowledges the late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age site of Old Scatness, which, it understands, later housed Pictish people and Vikings; recognises Mousa Broch, at 13 metres high, as the best-preserved Iron Age roundhouse still standing in the world, and wishes good luck to the Shetland bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status.
