110th Anniversary of the Kilbirnie Women Workers Strike
The motion
That the Parliament commends the Kilbirnie Women Workers on the 110th anniversary of their strike in 1913; acknowledges the determination of the women workers of the fishing net factories in Kilbirnie, who took part in the 22 week dispute to secure improved pay and conditions and union recognition; recognises the work of Kate McLean in setting up the branch of the National Federation of Women Workers in the thread mill in Kilbirnie in 1912; further recognises the financial support provided by the Scottish Trades Union Congress in helping to settle the dispute; believes that the progress that has been made in improving equality in the workplace is largely due to the efforts of women such as the Kilbirnie Women Workers in standing up for their rights, and further commends the women involved in 1913 for securing an agreement of secure pay, union recognition and non-victimisation of strikers.
