RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch 2023

The motion

That the Parliament notes that the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) annual Big Garden Birdwatch took place over three days from 27 to 29 January 2023; further notes that 312 people living in the Aberdeen Donside Constituency took part in the 2023 Big Garden Birdwatch; understands that the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey, attracting more than 36,000 participants from across Scotland, with over 5,500 children taking part in the birdwatch through their schools; notes that over 670,000 birds were counted in the 2023 birdwatch, with the House Sparrow retaining its place at the top of Scotland’s table for the 12th year in a row, with almost 120,000 being spotted by participants; understands that there has been a decline in numbers of all species of birds across the 44 years in which the survey has been conducted, and commends everyone who participated in the 2023 Big Garden Birdwatch and the efforts made to help assist the RSPB continue to monitor how the most common birds in Scotland are faring.
