Orkney Young Farmer’s Record-breaking Beast

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates 14-year-old Rowan Donaldson, from Redland in Stromness, on selling his Limousin-cross heifer for £6,100 at Orkney Auction Mart; notes that the two-year-old cow beat the existing record for a store beast by £2,700; understands that the heifer was entered into the Orkney Young Farmers’ overwintering show, after being bought locally in September and readied over the winter; further understands that its buyer, from a farm in Aberdeenshire, commented after the sale that this was “truly one of the best animals I’ve seen in Orkney for a very long time”, as well as that the heifer “has got the makings of a very good cow” and will make a valuable addition to his breeding stock; recognises that Rowan, the youngest person to enter the competition this year, personally selected the cow because she was a "nice, long, big-bummed beast" and he knew that he could succeed with her; further recognises that Rowan cared for her with a tailored feed ration and regular washing and brushing to prepare her for show, and that he hopes to put the money earned from the sale towards buying a “good beast” for next year’s competition; commends Rowan on his good eye and hard work, and wishes every success to Rowan in his future farming efforts and a healthy breeding life to his record-breaking beast.
