Red Plaque Unveiling in Dundee

The motion

That the Parliament commends Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) personnel in Dundee, and the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), for unveiling two commemorative Red Plaques during a ceremony at Blackness Fire Station on 13 April 2023 to mark the sacrifice of two Dundee firefighters, who died in the line of duty, over 60 years after their deaths; understands that the first plaque recognises the sacrifice of John Jamieson Buist, who died at a fire at Grants Jute Warehouse, Dundee, on 13 April 1962, after being trapped by burning bales of jute; further understands that his colleagues attempted to rescue him from the burning debris for over two hours, and that he lived with his wife, a former firewoman, and young son at the Northern Fire Station; notes that he was 53 and had 30 years’ service; understands that the second firefighter commemorated is William Carnegie, who was fatally injured less than three months later while attending a fire on Mains Road, Dundee, on 14 June 1962; notes that he sustained severe head injuries after falling 30 ft from the roof of a two-storey tenement at 58 Mains Road, was taken to hospital and died of his injuries on 8 July, at 44 years of age, and was survived by his wife and their 17-year-old son; recognises that these Red Plaques are part of a scheme set up by the FBU during its centenary to commemorate firefighters who died in the line of duty; highlights that each plaque is unveiled at a ceremony attended by servicing firefighters, FBU representatives, community members, fire chiefs and the family, friends and former colleagues of those honoured, and supports the FBU Red Plaque Project for the work it does to help communities remember their fallen firefighters and honour their service.
